Ab Mujhe Koi Intezaar Kahaan – Ishqiya

Who better than Gulzar to bring me out of translation-hibernation? I apologize for not updating for so long, work has me very busy nowadays but I promise to post more frequently now! I have a bunch of requests pending and I hope to get to them soon. Thanks to Latika G for sending me a request for translation of Ab Mujhe Koi Intezaar Kahaan from Ishqiya as its one of my favorite melancholic melodies and I couldn’t wait to translate it!

Abhishek Chaubey’s Ishqiya is the prequel of Dedh-Ishqiya, a film I wrote about in detail here along with a song translation of Hamri Atariya. Ishqiya is a black comedy where actor Vidya Balan plays the role of an unlikely femme fatale who manipulates two men into her own plan of vengeance. Portraying a twisted and dark world in a brilliant way, Ishqiya won a lot of praise from the critics and lead actor Vidya Balan swept all major awards for her nuanced portrayal of the lead protagonist Krishna Verma. The film features many beautiful songs, but Ab Mujhe Koi Intezaar Kahaan and Badi Dheere Jali Raina stand out like gems; combining Gulzar’s words, Vishal Bhardwaj’s music and Rekha Bhardwaj’s uniquely haunting voice. I hope you enjoy the translation and leave your feedback here or on  bollywoodtarjuma’s Facebook and Twitter page

Original Lyrics – Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahaan

Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahaan
Woh jo behthe the, aabshaar kahaan
Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahaan

Aankh ke ek gaaon mein,
raat ko khwaab aate the
Chooney se behthe the,
bole toh kehte the.
Udthe khwaabon ka aetbaar kahaan
Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahaan

Jin dino aap rehte the
Aankh mein dhoop thi
Ab to jaale hi jaale hain
Yeh bhi jaane hi wale hain
Woh jo tha dard ka karaar kahaan
Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahaan
Woh jo behthe the aabshaar kahaan

Translation of Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahaan by bollywoodtarjuma

No hope lives in me now.
Water that gushed down my eyes,
is also missing somehow.

Dreams used to visit,
a village in my eyes.
On touching, they leak,
through illusions they speak.
Passing like a summer cloud,
Musings can’t be trusted aloud.

The days you were here,
my warm eyes held the sun.
The days you stayed awhile,
heat lingered in the bosom.
Now it’s just cobwebs of past
and even they will not last.
Will I ever feel it again,
that bliss hiding beneath the pain.

No hope lives in me now.
Water that gushed down my eyes,
is also missing somehow.

Paani Paani Re – Maachis

This song by Gulzar, uses water as a motif for remembrance and travel through nostalgia. All powerful water can birth and destroy civilizations, yet it brings so much relief when it falls from the sky after a hot day, or fills our eyes to help us ease pain of our life. Its fascinating how a poet can spot so much life in a single word or phrase. The film, Maachis (matchstick ) is a must watch too for its sensitive and realistic portrayal of circumstances that led to the rise of anger and insurgency in the youth of Punjab in 1980s. As much awaited, Udta Punjab (Flying Punjab) releases soon, I was reminded on this film directed by Gulzar about the angry young blood of Punjab. Though the films are so different, I suppose we can agree that a small flame of a matchstick can engulf an entire generation in no time.

Original Lyrics-Paani Paani Re

pani pani re khare pani re
pani pani re khare pani re
naino me bhar jaa
ninde khali kar jaa

pani pani in pahado ki
dhalano se utar jana
dhua dhua kuchh vadiya
bhi aayegi guzar jana

ek gaav aayega
mera ghar aayega
jaa mere ghar jaa
ninde khali kar jaa

ye rudali jaisi rate
jagrato me bita dena
meri aankho me jo bole
mithe pakhi to uda lena

barfo me lage
mausam pighle
mausam hare kar jaa
ninde khali kar jaa

pani pani re khare pani re
pani pani re khare pani re
naino me bhar jaa
ninde khali kar jaa

Dear water, salted water,
arrive.
Pool into my eyes,
dry out the sleep
and make me rise.

Dear water,
tumble through the slopes,
of those hills,
pass through the misty valleys,
don’t halt till you reach
my village, my home.
Go inside and
dry out its sleep.

Stay up in these nights,
dense with mourning,
watch over and hush my eyes,
if a sweet bird should sing.
As the snow-cold bites,
melt the skies,
Turn the seasons over,
paint the field with a green cover.
Stay there and
dry out its sleep.

Dear water, salted water,
arrive.
Pool into my eyes,
dry out the sleep
and make me rise.

Kaminey – Kaminey

Kaminey/Rascals, a film about a pair of identical twins stuck in murky waters, is a part of a long tradition of ‘double’ films from Indian cinema. Apart from being a fairly compelling film, the jodi (pair) of Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar created some memorable songs. The title song is a brooding and existential ode to the tribulations of an human in this individualistic world. Hope you like my take on the beautiful words by Gulzar, rendered in the earthy voice of Vishal Bhardwaj himself.

Kya Kare Zindagi Isako Hum Jo Mile
Isaki Jaan Kha Gaye Raat Din Ke Gile]- (2)
Raat Din Gile Meri Aarzu Kamini
Mere Khwaab Bhi Kaminey
Ek Dil Se Dosti Thi Ki Huzur Bhi Kaminey
Kya Kare Zindagi Isako Hum Jo Mile
Isaki Jaan Kha Gaye Raat Din Ke Gile

Kabhi Laalten Deke Kahaan Aasmaan Pe Taango-2
Jine Ke Sab Karine Hai Hamesha Se Kaminey

Meri Daastaan Kamini, Mere Raaste Kaminey
Ek Dil Se Dosti Thi Yeh Huzur Bhi Kaminey

Jiska Bhi Chehara Chhila Andar Se Aur Nikla

Translation of Kaminey by bollywoodtarjuma

What to do with you,
My dear life?
Consumed by the fears of sun and shade
My wishes, my dreams, my flights of fancy
All of them
mean and lousy..

And when I made friends with my heart,
it betrayed me,
all the same.
What to do with you,
My dear life?

At times I wished to cage the moon,
at other times,
I fought the pitch dark night
fanning dying embers of light
All of my fabled journeys,
are selfish narratives,
the endless tales of lived letdowns

And when I made friends with my heart,
it betrayed me,
all the same.
What to do with you,
My dear life?

I tried living another’s life,
Snatched a face, the skin
and then some more.
But failed to be anyone
but me
Like the modest pigeon who grew feathers,
To be the dancing-deceiving peacock
It always was.
I was wicked sometimes,
at times it were the others

My friendships, my beloveds,
My cherished, my adored
My wishes, my dreams, my flights of fancy
All of them
mean and lousy..

And when I made friends with my heart,
it betrayed me,
all the same.
What to do with you,
My dear life?

Naina – Omkara

This metaphor-rich song talking about the devilish magic of eyes (naina) is one of the many genius pieces by Gulzar that amazes me with its profoundly simple expression. The collaboration of Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar spins magic that gets my translation instincts going in an over-drive sometime. You will see it often on my blog I think.

Translation of Naina by bollwoodtarjuma

Don’t believe them, don’t hear them out
Those pair of eyes,
Magic swirls in them wide awake,
Hypnotic and enchanting,
Leaving behind footprints of barren sleep

Those pair of eyes,
they will trick you, fool you, betray you

Those eyes crave to sink their venom
into the good blood and the bad blood,
real blood and the step blood,
they intoxicate the night- clouds,
planting rainbows that wash ashore
till the dawn breaks,
and you awake,
insane for more

Those eyes and their long strolls,
to heaven and beyond
The pit-stops to plant breeze, drizzle and rain
and the lush green fields.

How to trust their word,
for eyes don’t answer for the world they create,
the world that lives and dies in the mind,
the world of cloudless showers and rainless downpour,
leaving no trace in the faithful ink

Those pair of eyes,
they will trick you, fool you, betray you
