Karvan Guzar Gaya -Nai Umar Ki Nayi Fasal

The meaning of a philosophical song written by Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’ like Karvan Guzar Gaya from Nai Umar Ki Nayi Fasal (1966) can’t be translated in its true spirit that easily. It took me a while to get to a point where I feel somewhat satisfied by the translation so I am posting it now. Thanks for sending in the request Maryam T and so sorry for the delay in posting!

Neeraj was known to have distaste for commercial demands for meaningless lyrics in Bollywood films and while he wrote infrequently for Hindi cinema, he has some very successful songs to his credit. He was a prominent poet and academic and his style was considered very profound yet accessible for the masses. He believed that poet’s job was to reflect the truth of his environment, however unpleasant it may seem as human words are an extension of their values. This song displays his mastery over literary expression as he delivers stanza after stanza filled with waves of hopelessness and angst of youth disillusioned by the world. The thought-provoking film, based on student politics was shot in Aligarh Muslim University campus and can be watched here.

Dreams fell like wilted flowers,
friends pricked like thorns,
like the acacia of the garden,
all adornments disappeared..
and I kept looking for the spring,
the caravan departed and yet I stood,
soaked in the dust billowing ..

Life wasn’t even awake when the sun went down,
it slipped away before feet got off the ground.
Dried leaves fell and branches burnt out,
desires stayed on while years thrashed about.
Melodies mourned and dreams lay buried,
clothed in smoke, the lamps sat wearied.
But I stayed on, right on that sprawl,
where time raced past me,
leaving me to see my falling,
the caravan departed and yet I stood,
soaked in the dust billowing..

Such was the youth in its prime,
that every bloom fell for it
and trembling reflections lost their mind.
Earth on my side and the sky on the other,
everyone who saw it, felt their heart flutter.
But one day wind turned around,
crushing the rosebuds, choking the ground.
Robbed and beaten, I was still watching,
in the drunken haziness of musical time.
The caravan departed and yet I stood,
soaked in the dust billowing..

My fingers brushed the tresses of moonlight,
lips could call the spring quickly into sight,
I got pain so I could love those who hurt,
my breaths granted to bring heaven on earth.
But dawn became dusk and nothing materialized,
waves of time wrecked sand-fort of my pride.
From beneath the shroud of death I saw,
the remnants of my own shrine,
while I stayed back, afraid and drowning,
the caravan departed and yet I stood,
soaked in the dust billowing..

A new ray walked with a vermillioned parting,
and feet danced to the rhythmic drum-beating,
the word spread about the new bride,
village flooded out with hope-filled eyes.
Just then lightning struck with poisoned-hail,
botching the colours and shredding the veil.
Like the call of morning-prayer that dawn,
I watched from a house far away,
at the bridal palanquin –bearers leaving,
the caravan departed and yet I stood,
soaked in the dust billowing..

 

Aane Wala Pal – Gol Maal

As I struggle to post more often to keep up with my other work, poetic genius Gulzar’s birthday today offers the perfect opportunity to come back to my love for translating poetry. Aane Wala Pal from Gol Maal, is one of the many songs written by Gulzar that explore romance in its philosophical dimensions. Time is physically the same but relative in its experience. It passes quickly, heavy with stolen moments when one is with a beloved, but painfully slowly when it’s time to wait for the next meeting. This song is an exploration of that fleeting time, asking us to seek every moment for the endless stories of joy and pain it holds and live it fully for everything it’s worth. Also, the song inspires me to find precious moments to post more translations of Gulzar’s poetry this month. Lets see how it goes/ As usual, feedback from my readers would only encourage me further!

Yeh Dooriyan – Love Aaj Kal

Translation of Yeh Dooriyan from Love Aaj Kal (Love Nowadays) was a unique experience because of the way lyricist Irshad Kamil uses a single word (dooriyan: distances) repeatedly and rhythmically. Kamil does have a gift for wonderfully combining wordplay with rhythm as seen in songs like Piya Milenge, Jag Ghoomeya, Nadaan Parindey, Main Rang Sharbato ka, Patakha Guddi etc. His words always seem to have a deeper, almost spiritual understanding of love and affection that sets them apart from regular Bollywood fare. This song sung beautifully by Mohit Chauhan, for instance, speaks of contradictions and confusions that plague people who are in love. Whether it’s due to conventions of the society or the need to be desperately practical, the aloofness that people often adopt in matters of heart is questioned in this song, slowly moving towards a resolve to demolish the hesitations that keep beloveds distant.

Awaragi – Mohsin Naqvi/Ghulam Ali

What is the value of carefree-ness, inertia, vagrancy and lonesomeness? These words are almost never used in a positive connotation in the (ironically highly individualistic) urban world. Yet, Mohsin Naqvi works over and over again with the seemingly negative word, awargi and spins a compelling argument to comfort those who like to be with themselves more than others, those who despise social niceties and those who get left out of the circle of typical social behavior.

The request for this translation came from Saqib H and I am grateful to him for allowing me to explore this extremely eloquent poem which has been performed by many ghazal singers, most famously by legendary Pakistani singer, Ghulam Ali whose velvety rendition leaves you a little more mesmerized every time. Since he is one of my favourites, I would highly recommend listening to some of his best songs here, including the ones he has performed for Bollywood films.

Jeena Jeena – Badlapur

The 50th song translation on bollywoodtarjuma is a special request from Ashwin K for the translation of Jeena Jeena from Badlapur. It’s a touching and deeply romantic song expressing love and adoration for a beloved. A fairly short song by Bollywood standards (just one stanza) this song performed by Atif Aslam, reminisces about the way life transforms into something beautiful with the mere advent of love.

Badlapur, a psychological revenge-based thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan, was a commercial success last year and brought accolades to its ensemble cast. Owing to its soothing melody and moving lyrics, Jeena Jeena, was a huge chart-buster and remained on top on iTunes for several months. Hope you like my effort Ashwin, do let me know your feedback! Piya Milenge – Raanjhanaa

Piya Milenge from Ranjhanaa is a spiritual ballet by Irshad Kamil that flows like a river, with rhythm clutching the word-play and meanings playing hide and seek. Just like I mentioned before for Chhaiya Chhaiya, this song is untranslatable in a fully literal sense since so much meaning slips through like sand. However, it most certainly belongs to the Sufi tradition of poetry writing where God is seen as a beloved and spiritual realization is sought through love. The word piya, often used to indicate a beloved in Bollywood songs is borrowed directly from the Sufi philosophy where love for God is professed with passion and a bit of desperation.

At a basic level, the song is about the search for a beloved which is seen as futile as love can only reside in all things immaterial. At a deeper level, Piya Milenge is sort of meta-song that speaks to itself. Through tricky phrase-rhythms set to music maestro A R Rahman’s music, the words urge you to stop searching to meaning in them and look somewhere deeper, read between the lines and music to realize that all implications and significance lives inside you and not in illusion of language. The meaning I have extrapolated on here is entirely my interpretation and I would love to hear what you have to say about it too, so do comment and let me know. Chand Sifarish – Fanaa

Translation of Chaand Sifarish from Fanaa was on the wishlist for a while and I am glad it’s finally here. It’s a song that moves swiftly between flirtation, passion, fierceness and a determined desire to perish for love. Evocatively written by Prasoon Joshi and performed by Shaan and Kailash Kher in their enthusiastic and energetic voices, Chaand Sifarish with hints of Sufi Qawaali-style was an instant hit and remains a well-loved Bollywood number full of romantic similes. The film itself was full of Urdu couplets and poems (shayari) and its songs were very popular. Dekho naa, is another fan-favorite that can be easily described as a part of a long legacy of wordy-manifestations of rain showers-fueled love-making on Bollywood screen. Sanwaar Loon – Lootera

Got a request from Lisa H for translation of Sanwaar Loon from Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera. She mentioned her love for Bollywood songs and specifically asked me to explain the meaning of phrase ‘sanwaar loon’ that repeats in the song repeatedly. She also asked my why this song sounds so ‘different’ from the contemporary Bollywood songs.  ‘Sanwaar’ is sophisticated word that means indulging/beautifying/pampering or even taming to a certain extent. Hence, its use is seen in many contexts, This song that won singer Monali Thakur many awards is about a woman who feels the love and desire for a man growing inside her body and mind. The resultant phrases are her mutterings and musings about how she wishes to both indulge in her new found longings and tame them to avoid embarrassing herself in the flush of a very self-conscious youth. The song has been composed brilliantly by Amit Trivedi to suit the time and place where the film is set, i.e. 1950s West Bengal. It sounds very classic Bollywood with a minimalist ‘non-digital’ sounding orchestra, innocent vocals and the style of having one mukhda (opening stanza) and two antaras (stanzas that follow the opening one) with identical tunes. In the last two decades, Bollywood music has innovated a lot and moved away from such song renderings, hence making this song a kind of refreshing retrospective melody.

 Lootera (Robber) is loosely based on O Henry’s tragic short story, The Last Leaf. It had a fairly successful run at the box office, winning praise for the lead actors, Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh for their performances. The film also won praise for its meticulous production design that created the 1950s West Bengal is all its sophistication and glory. Despite the scale on which the film was mounted, Lootera was astute and understated in the right measure. This wonderful video gives the entire lowdown on behind-the-scenes of this picturesque film. Allah Ke Bande – Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II

The translation of Allah Ke Bande is dedicated to maverick Indian singer Kailash Kher who was born on this day in 1973 and has established himself as one of the most dynamic performers of the current generation of Bollywood singers. It was the introduction of Kher for mainstream Bollywood music lovers. This song written by talented singer-composer-lyricist Vishal Dadlani, is saturated with spiritual metaphors and a message to never-say-die in the face of adversities. It became a rage in 2003-2004 period, with all radio channels playing it endlessly for months, catapulting Kher to well-deserved stardom after years of struggle.

Thirteen years later, Kher is going strong, establishing himself not only as a sought-after playback artist, but as an independent performer of Sufi-style popular music. His band with Mumbai-based musician brothers, Paresh Kamath and Naresh Kamath called Kailasa has released a string of successful albums including Kailasa, Jhoomo Re and Chandan Mein. With his raw, fierce and soulful voice he has won many awards and accolades for songs rendered in eight different Indian languages. With over a thousand concert performances under his belt in less than eleven years, it’s enough to say that his voice will inspire generations.
