Piya Milenge – Raanjhanaa

Piya Milenge from Ranjhanaa is a spiritual ballet by Irshad Kamil that flows like a river, with rhythm clutching the word-play and meanings playing hide and seek. Just like I mentioned before for Chhaiya Chhaiya, this song is untranslatable in a fully literal sense since so much meaning slips through like sand. However, it most certainly belongs to the Sufi tradition of poetry writing where God is seen as a beloved and spiritual realization is sought through love. The word piya, often used to indicate a beloved in Bollywood songs is borrowed directly from the Sufi philosophy where love for God is professed with passion and a bit of desperation.

At a basic level, the song is about the search for a beloved which is seen as futile as love can only reside in all things immaterial. At a deeper level, Piya Milenge is sort of meta-song that speaks to itself. Through tricky phrase-rhythms set to music maestro A R Rahman’s music, the words urge you to stop searching to meaning in them and look somewhere deeper, read between the lines and music to realize that all implications and significance lives inside you and not in illusion of language. The meaning I have extrapolated on here is entirely my interpretation and I would love to hear what you have to say about it too, so do comment and let me know. Original Lyrics – Piya Milenge

Jisko dhoondhe baahar baahar
Woh baitha hai bheetar chhup ke
Tere andar ek samandar
Kyun dhoondhe tubke tubke
Jisko dhoondhe baahar baahar
Woh baitha hai bheetar chhup ke
Tere andar ek samandar
Kyun dhoondhe tubke tubke
Akal ke parde peeche kar de..
Akal ke parde peeche kar de
Ghoonghat ke pat khol re
Tohe piya, piya
Tohe piya milenge, milenge, milenge..

Paake khona, kho ke paana, hota aaya re
Sang saathi saa hai woh toh woh hai saaya re
Jhanka tune hi na bas jee se jee mein re
Bole seene mein woh tere dheeme dheeme re
Tohe piya milenge, milenge, milenge..
Tohe piya milenge, milenge, milenge..

Ash-HaduAll’laa ilaaha illAllah
Wa’ash-hadu anna Mohammed-ur Rasool Allah
(I am witness to no God but Allah,
I believe Prophet was the messenger of Allah)

Jo hai dekha, wohi dekha to kya dekha hai
Dekho woh jo auron ne naa kabhi dekha hai
Naino se na aisa kuch dekha jo hota hai
Naina meecho toh woh sab dikh jaata hai
Tohe piya milenge, milenge, milenge…
Tohe piya milenge, milenge, milenge…

Ussi ko paana, ussi ko chhoona
Kahin pe woh na, kahin pe tu na
Jahaan pe wo na, wahaan pe soona
Yahaan pe soona…
Tohe piya milenge, piya milenge, milenge
Tohe piya milenge, milenge, milenge..

Translation of Piya Milenge by bollywoodtarjuma

The one you search on the outsides,
only inside is where he resides.
Why to drift in other blues,
when an ocean flows inside you?
Just open up your shrouded mind,
remove the veil that blinds..
And yes, you will find him for sure,
the beloved, the one you adore.

Finding and losing love
can happen infinitely,
the confidant can be a shadow,
you hold on desperately.
Why don’t you look inside,
when your heart gives a sigh,
gently as you recall his allure,
Yes, you will find him for sure,
the beloved, the one you adore.

If you saw what everyone sees,
then you found nothing.
Find what no one caught,
to move beyond looking.
With open eyes you can hardly see,
close the lids to explore the deep sea,
with gushing love, pristine and pure,
yes, you will find him for sure,
the beloved, the one you adore.

You wish to reach and touch,
you want to find him so much,
but he is right here
while you are elsewhere.
But you search for him nevertheless,
fighting vacant loneliness,
Just wait a bit and endure,
and you will find him for sure,
the beloved, the one you adore.

Jai Ho – Slumdog Millionaire

.

A song by Gulzar is generally set for an award from the time it reaches his pen. While the world was charmed by Academy Award winning song Jai Ho, Bollywood fans accustomed to Gulzar’s genius and A R Rahman’s music were not exactly surprised. Combination of energetic beats and lovely metaphors, this song is a delight every time one hears it. Here is my take on the meaning of Jai Ho lyrics in English, minus the Spanish stanzas written and sung by the very talented Tanvi Shah, as I can’t translate those, as much as I wish I could. I would appreciate if anyone with the knowledge of Spanish and English  helps me with the same. Jai ho!

Hail! Salute!
Hail! Salute!

Come on under the silken
cover of my being,
come rest under the blue of
the gold embroidered sky.

I wait for you and
lose my life bit by bit,
dancing on smoldering embers
in the pitch dark of the night.
I push sleep out of my eyes,
blow by blow,
while burning my fingers counting,
endless scorching stars that glow.

Come on under the silken
cover of my being,
come rest under the blue of
the gold embroidered sky.

Come and taste the honey-sweet night,
keep it in your heart,
as the last frontier of this fight.
The dark of your kohl-rimmed eyes,
grips me like black magic on the rise.
Come on under the silken
 cover of my being,
come rest under the blue of
the gold embroidered sky.

Please say something now,
for you have stayed
on my lips for long.
I won’t even look in your
twinkling diamond eyes.
Please don’t be shy
and let your words rise.

Come on under the silken
cover of my being,
come rest under the blue of
the gold embroidered sky.

Hail! Salute!
Hail! Salute!

Chaiyya Chaiyya – Dil Se

Rarely does a film with such impressive credit list appear anywhere. Dil Se was very special for bringing together mavericks from every field of Indian cinema including multiple award winning director Mani Ratnam, music composer A R Rahman and of course, Gulzar. The song Chaiyya Chaiyya has since then become a legend of sorts, appearing on the musical Bombay Dreams, in the opening and closing credits of the 2006 film, Inside Man, pilot episode of Smith and an episode of CSI: Miami. The  video of the song, daringly shot on top of a moving train without any VFX by ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan, has been viewed some 24 million times on Youtube! No wonder it was polled to be at number nine in the BBC’s  2002 list of ten most popular songs of all times.

So after this long introduction, I must put a disclaimer: aside from being legendary, this song belongs to the ‘untranslatable’ category. One can only try to capture some of the meaning of this hypnotically charged up number. Not to forget, the obsessive repetition of words and phrases that lends its magic to this song can never by transported to any other language. This translation is a tribute to the charm of Chaiyya Chaiyya! Every time I decided to quit translating it, listening to this song made me get back to the keyboard and now I am going to dance to Chaiyya Chaiyya after posting! Let me know what you think. Jinke sar ho ishq ki chaaon
Paaon ke neeche jaanat hogi
Jinke sar ho ishq ki chaaon

Chal chaiyya chaiyya chaiyya chaiyya

Saare ishq ki chhaaon chal chaiyya chaiyya

Voh yaar hai jo khushboo ki tarah
Voh jiski zubaan urdu ki tarah
Meri shaam raat, meri kaayanat

Mera nagma vohi mera qalma vohi
Mera nagma nagma mera qalma qalma

Yaar misaale ous dhale
Paaon ke tale firdous chale
Kabhi daal daal kabhi paat paat
Main hava pe dhoondhoon uske nishaan

Saare ishq ki chaaon chal chaiyya chaiyya
Saare ishq ki chaaon chal chaiyya
Pau janat chale chal chaiyya chaiyya
Pau janat chale chal chaiyya

Main uske roop ka shehdaai
Vo dhoop chhanv se harjaai
Vo shokh hai rang badalta hai
Main rangroop ka saudaai
Main rangroop ka saudaai

Jinke sar ko ishq ki chhaaon
Paaon ke neeche jannat hogi
Jinke sar ko ishq ki chhaaon
Paaon ke neeche jannat hogi
Shaam raat meri kaaynaat
Vo yaar mera sainya sainya

Translation of Chaiyya Chaiyya by bollywoodtarjuma

Those who’ve been blessed with
the shadow of love over their head,
will have heaven under their feet one day

Lets all walk under the shadow of love
Lets move towards heaven
called love

That beloved who wafts like a perfume,
with the expression of Urdu,
my dusk and night,
my world
my obsession, my love.

Lets all walk under the shadow of love
Lets move towards heaven
called love

Sometimes that marigold blooms here with pride,
at times it appears elsewhere,
fragrant and bright.
I will wear her like a charmed thimble,
if I see even a sign of her.
She surrounds me like my conscience,
my song, my prayer,
who disappears like the morning dew,
leaving paradise on her footprints,
as I look for her,
on trees and leaves,
and every whiff of air I breathe.

Lets all walk under the shadow of love
Lets move towards heaven
called love

I am a devotee of her beauty,
but she plays hide and seek,
like sun and shade.
She changes colours,
as I perfect my business of
searching for her multi-hued face,
My days, nights and twilight,
My world, my universe, my cosmos,
all breathe my beloved’s name.

Lets all walk under the shadow of love
Lets move towards heaven
called love
