Another one of those metaphorical songs, working with a single phrase, i.e. a bend of the road in a city. Although the song means something different in the context of the film (its a romantic duet); for me, it represents the experience of an urban space by two people in love. A big metropolitan truly represents class-contrast where aspirations of lovers can be made and unmade at bends of the roads. They can get lost in the maze of identical looking houses and pathways and spend endless time on the roadside, waiting for a moment of intimacy together. A song that says more than it really says, in Gulzar’s inimitable style. All the songs of Aandhi  (Storm) are in fact, evergreen classics.

Original Lyrics-Is Mod Se Jaate Hain

is mod se jaate hai is mod se jaate hai
kuchh sust qadam raste kuchh tez qadam raahe
is mod se jaate hai
kuchh sust qadam raste kuchh tez qadam raahe
patthar ki haveli ko shishe ke gharaudo me
tinako ke nasheman tak is mod se jaate hai

aandhi ki tarah udakar ik raah guzarati hai
aandhi ki tarah udakar ik raah guzarati hai
sharamaati hui koi qadamo se utarati hai
in reshami raaho me ik raah to vo hogi
tum tak jo pahuchati hai is mod se jaati hai
is mod se jaate hai

ik dur se aati hai paas aake palatati hai
ik dur se aati hai paas aake palatati hai
ik raah akeli si rukati hai na chalati hai
ye sochake baithi hun ik raah to vo hogi
tum tak jo pahuchati hai is mod se jaate hai

Translation of Is Mod Se Jaate Hain by bollywoodtarjuma

Right at this bend,
pass some lazy-legged paths,
and some hurried trails.
Stone walled villas, fragile glass houses,
and straw-thatched nests,
all stay around,
this very turn.

The night passes from here,
like billowing storm,
while a shy, dainty-footed descends,
breaking some norms.
There must be a lane,
among these silk-laden paths,
which has your name,
right at this bend.

One road comes from afar,
lonesome, unbending,
static and unmoving.
I sit here wondering and unsure,
if I can reach your abode,
waiting,
right at this bend.
