Yun Shabnami – Saawariya

On the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, bollywoodtarjuma presents the translation of this beautiful song set to the backdrop of moon-sighting on the auspicious night. In this song, the wait for the moon is seen as a parallel to the wait for the beloved, who appears after many days of patience and penance. The word used for beloved, i.e. sanwariya (which is also the title of the film) literally means blue-black complexioned. Originating from sanwla (dark), it’s a common term used for a tan-skinned lover in Hindustani poetry. The reference is likely to be borrowed from the complexion of Hindu god Krishna, who was known to be dark-skinned and extremely attractive.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Sanwariya is loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s celebrated short story of unrequited love, White Nights. It featured debutantes Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor as the Dreamer and Nastenka respectively. The film boasts of elaborate sets and costumes, and great cinematography but was commercially unsuccessful. The songs of the films, however became huge hits, owing to director Bhansali’s intricate understanding of music and meticulous eye for choreography.

Original Lyrics– Yun Shabnami
Yoon shabnami, pehle nahi thi chandni
Chand woh bharmaa gaya
Tujhko dekha toh, sharma gaya
Woh churaane laga hai nazar
Yoon shabnami, pehle nahi thi chandni

Dekho chand aaya, chand nazar aaya
Dekho chand aaya, chand nazar aaya
Dekho chand aaya, chand nazar aaya
Aaya aaya aaya, chand aaya sharmaaya
Haan ji haan, Aaya aaya
Haan ji haan, aaya sharmaaya
Tu bhi aaja, saawariya..

Dheere dheere aake hawa, gungunaake
Har khabar de tumhari
Kaisa ye nasha hai, nazar mein ghula hai
Har ghadi hai khumaari
Nashe mein kadam mere, udhar kabhi idhar
Gumsum nazar, jaaye kidhar
Kho gaye tujh mein hum is qadar
Yoon shabnami, pehle nahi thi chandni
Chand woh bharmaa gaya
Tujhko dekha toh, sharma gaya
Woh churaane laga hai nazar

Saawariya, tu aaja
Saawariya

Never was the night so luscious before….

The moon is smitten to the core,
saw you and shied away some more,
its hidden behind twilight’s door,
wondering how,
night was never this luscious before..

The moon is in sight,
See, the demure crescent,
is now shining bright.

So here I wait for you
my dark-hued beloved,
please let me see you now,
my cherished.

Slow breeze floats and hums,
gives your news and strums.
This rush is mingled in my eyes,
with every moment, the elixirs rise.

In this state of inebriation,
my feet stumble without caution.
My wordless vision wanders,
where to go, it sits and ponders.
I am lost in your presence galore,
That I just noticed how,
night was never this luscious before,
the moon is smitten to the core,
saw you and shied away some more

The moon is in sight,
See, the demure crescent,
is now shining bright.

So here I wait for you
my dark-hued beloved,
please let me see you now,
my cherished.

Sooraj Dooba Hai – Roy

A strictly dance-worthy Bollywood number like this one need not be devoid of a beautiful meaning. Starting with an evocative phrase, Ho ja zara matalabi (Be a little self-centered), the song penned by Kumaar is a call to party hard, with chest-thumping disco music by Amaal Malik. But that’s not all, the song also takes on a philosophical appeal to for being a bit more self-loving, a bit more carefree and use the gratification from dancing and celebrating to live fully in every moment. The song is performed by the talented Arijit Singh, who became the hot favorite of Bollywood music lovers after his tracks from Mohit Suri’s Aashiqui 2 became a rage in 2013. You can listen to all the tracks here and let me know if you want any  translated. Although known for his naturally pathos-filled, romantic voice, Arijit Singh embraces his inner rock star in this song, ably supported by Aditi Singh Sharma.

Original Lyrics-Sooraj Dooba Hai

Matlabi ho jaa zara matlabi
Duniya ki sunta hai kyon
Khud ki bhi sunle kabhi
Kucch baat galat bhi ho jaye
Kucch der yeh dil bhi kho jaye
Befikar dhadkanen is tarah se chalen
Shor goonje yahan se vahan

Sooraj dooba hai yaron
Do ghunt nashe ke maaro
Raste bhula do sare gharbaar ke
Sooraj dooba hai yaron
Do ghunt nashe ke maaro
Gham tum bhula do sare sansar ke

Ata pataa rahe na kisi ka hame
Yehi kahe yeh pal zindagi ka hame
Ata pataa rahe na kisi ka
Yehi kahe yeh pal zindagi ka
Ke khudgarz si khaahish liye
Be-sans bhi hum-tum jiyein
Hai gulabi gulabi sama
Sooraj dooba hai yaron
Do ghunt nashe ke maaro
Raste bhula do sare gharbaar ke
Sooraj dooba hai yaron
Do ghunt nashe ke maaro
Gham tum bhula do sare sansar ke

Chale nahi, udde asmaan pe abhi
Pata na ho hai jaana kahaan pe abhi
Chale nahi, udde asmaan pe
Pata na ho hai jaana kahaan pe
Ke bemanzile ho sab raste
Duniya se ho zara faasle
Kucch khud se bhi ho duriyaan
Sooraj dooba hai yaron
Do ghunt nashe ke maaro
Raste bhula do sare gharbaar ke
Sooraj dooba hai yaron
Do ghunt nashe ke maaro
Gham tum bhula do sare sansar ke

Be a little self-centered
Why care for the world?
Trust your instinct,
it’s what makes you distinct.
If something goes awry
and your self loses its way,
Just let the heartbeat thump away,
its roar echoing to convey….

Dancing night has swallowed the sun,
time to drink and have some fun,
and to forget all roads to home, one by one.
Dancing night has swallowed the sun,
time to drink and have some fun,
and to leave all worries behind, one by one.

Female:
Ask me* for anything
I can give you everything
Male:
Forget all roads heading home, one by one
Female:
Ask me for anything
I can give you everything
Male:
leave all worries behind, one by one.

Who is aware of anything now,
this moment is screaming, and how.
With a selfish desire we live on,
even with our breaths forgone,
vibe here is flushed to crimson…

Dancing night has swallowed the sun,
time to drink and have some fun,
and to forget all roads to home, one by one.
Dancing night has swallowed the sun,
time to drink and have some fun,
and to leave all worries behind, one by one.

Forget walking now, let’s grow wings and fly,
without a purpose, just wander the sky.
All our trails will be destination-free,
keeping distance from our own psyche,
let’s run afar before anyone can come…

Dancing night has swallowed the sun,
time to drink and have some fun,
and to forget all roads to home, one by one.
Dancing night has swallowed the sun,
time to drink and have some fun,
and to leave all worries behind, one by one.

Female:
Ask me for anything
I can give you everything
Male:
Forget all roads heading home, one by one
Female:
Ask me for anything
I can give you everything
Male:
leave all worries behind, one by one

Saawali Si Raat – Barfi!

A song about that moment when two people in love find a connection that goes beyond world of speaking and hearing. The solace of love can often be found in the empathy of the sweetheart’s eyes, in his/her gentle touch or even in the contentment of watching him/her smile. Language can often not capture the mystique and charisma of such moments, but Swanand Kirkire manages to do just that and so wonderfully.

Original Lyrics-Saawali Si Raat

Saawali si raat ho, khamoshi ka saath ho
hmm Saawali si raat ho, khamoshi ka saath ho
Bin kahe bin sune, baat ho teri meri
Neend jab ho laapata, udasiyaan zara hata
Khwabon ki razaai mein, raat ho teri meri

Jhilmil taaron si aankhein teri
Khare khare paani ki jheelein bhare
Hardam yun hi tu hansti rahe
Har pal hai dil mein khwahishein
Khamoshi ki loriyaan sun toh raat so gayi
Bin kahe bin sune, baat ho teri meri

Barfi ke tukde sa, chanda dekho aadha hai
Dheere dheere chakhna zara
Hansne rulane ka aadha-pauna vaada hai
Kankhi se takna zara
Ye jo lamhe hain lamhon ki behti nadi mein
Haan bheeg loon, haan bheeg loon
Ye jo aankhen hain aankhon ki gumsum zubaan ko
Main seekh loon, haan seekh loon
Ankahee si guftagu, ansuni si justajoo
Bin kahe, bin sune, apni baat ho gayi

Saawali si raat ho khamoshi ka saath ho
Bin kahe bin sune, baat ho teri meri

Translation of Saawali Si Raat by bollywoodtarjuma

In a tan-painted night,
with silence accompanying,
I want to talk to you,
wordlessly, without hearing.

When sleep disappears,
send the gloom very far,
under the quilt of dreams,
night will be just ours.

Your eyes are like sparkling stars,
flooding a briny lake,
Your smile may never fade,
it’s the only wish I make.
Hearing a silent lullaby,
the night falls asleep with the sky.

The shiny crescent of moon,
is a piece of sweetmeat,
savour it slowly,
as it’s a rare treat
Look cross-eyed,
at the promise we share,
an uncertain pact of smiles,
and a few free-flowing tears.
This fluid river of moments,
I wish to soak in every instant,
This wordless language of your eyes,
I wish to unravel their guise.

Unspoken was the talk,
and unheard were yearnings,
yet silently we heard,
and couldn’t stop speaking.
In a tan-painted night,
with silence accompanying,
I want to talk to you,
wordlessly, without hearing.

Tu Jaane Naa – Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani

A song about the kind of love that probably inspires most poetry in the world, i.e. the unrequited kind. Regret, pathos and an almost relentless questioning make this song’s words very compelling. All the songs of this film were actually quite the chart-busters, though the film itself wasn’t that impressive.

Original lyrics-Tu Jaane Naa

Kaise btaayein kyun tujhko chahe yaara bata na paaye
Baatein dilo ki dekho jo baaki aankhein tujhe samjhaye

Nigahon mein dekho meri jo hai bas gaya
Woh hai milta tumse hubahu
Ooo jaane teri aankhein thi ya baatein thi wajah
Huye tum jo dil ki aarzoo
Tum paas ho ke bhi tum aas ho ke bhi
Ehsaas ho ke bhi apne nahi aise hain
Humko gile tumse na jaane kyun

Meelon ke hain faasle tum se na jaane kyun
Tu jaane na… tu jaane na…

Khayalon mein lakhon baatein yun tu keh gaya
Bola kuch na tere samne
Ooo huea na be-gaane bhi tum hoke haar ke
Dekho tum na mere hi bane
Afsos hota hai dil bhi yeh rota hai
Sapne sanjota hai pagla hua soche yeh
Hum the mile tumse na jaane kyun

Tu jaane na… tu jaane na…
Tu jaane na… tu jaane na…

Translation of Tu Jaane Naa by bollywoodtarjuma

How do I tell you why I adore you,
How the words stuck in my heart,
long to see your face,
you don’t know,
you really don’t..

Don’t know why,
we didn’t halt, though we met
why countless miles separate us,
why my lashes hold your dreams,
why my stories chase your awareness.

you don’t know,
you really don’t

The one that found a home in my eyes,
is an reflection of your face.
Wonder was it your eyes or your words,
that colored my desires?
I can almost feel your embrace,
in my hopes and pains.
Yet why do I whine,
that you are not mine?

You don’t know,
you really don’t.

Deep in my thoughts,
are embedded many imagined conversations,
that fell silent when they saw you.
You were with another,
yet you never forsake me,
Then why didn’t you
just belong to me?
My heart cries in regret,
and so unreasonably,
so insanely wonders,
Why did I ever meet you?

You don’t know,
you really don’t.

Nadaan Parindey – Rockstar

An touching song calling out to the lover who, like a migratory bird has crossed the seas, but is expected to return, hopefully before his/her lover dies of separation pangs. A R Rahman can make any song alive with his brilliant music, but Irshad Kamil’s lyrics truly stand out in this popular song. Urging the person to be himself, without pretense and escapism, this song has the power to inspire ever so subtly.

Translation of Nadaan Parindey by bollywoodtarjuma

O my silly bird,
Come home,
Why roam the foreign lands,
weary and tired,
why spend nomadic days and nights?
O my silly bird,
Come home

Your body is dotted with pain,
skin soiled by fate,
yet your wings slice the high winds,
running from your own reflection
Just break those skies,
burn those worlds,
reveal your true self,
you can’t hide it any more,
for only you live in yourself
you are your anchor and guide.
Any path you may choose,
you will get yourself home
Eventually..

O my silly bird,
Come home

My little bird,
my soul waits for you,
as my body is scavenged by crows,
I beg to them to spare my eyes,
for I desire to see you,
one last time
So my silly bird,
come home, come soon
