Chand Sifarish – Fanaa

Translation of Chaand Sifarish from Fanaa was on the wishlist for a while and I am glad it’s finally here. It’s a song that moves swiftly between flirtation, passion, fierceness and a determined desire to perish for love. Evocatively written by Prasoon Joshi and performed by Shaan and Kailash Kher in their enthusiastic and energetic voices, Chaand Sifarish with hints of Sufi Qawaali-style was an instant hit and remains a well-loved Bollywood number full of romantic similes. The film itself was full of Urdu couplets and poems (shayari) and its songs were very popular. Dekho naa, is another fan-favorite that can be easily described as a part of a long legacy of wordy-manifestations of rain showers-fueled love-making on Bollywood screen. Original Lyrics – Chand Sifarish

Subhaan Allaah Subhaan Allah Subhaan Allah Subhaan Allah

Chaand Sifarish Jo Karta Hamari Deta Woh Tumko Bata
Sharm-O-Haya Pe Parde Gira Ke Karni Hain Hamko Khata
Zidd Hain Ab Toh Hain Khud Ko Mitana Hona Hain Tujhmein Fanaa
Chaand Sifarish Jo Karta Hamari Deta Woh Tumko Bata
Sharm-O-Haya Pe Parde Gira Ke Karni Hain Hamko Khata

Teri Adaa Bhi Hain Jhonke Wali Chhu Ke Gujar Jaane De
Teri Lachak Hain Ke Jaise Daali Dil Mein Utar Jaane De
Aaja Baahon Mein Karke Bahana Hona Hain Tujhmein Fanaa
Chaand Sifarish Jo Karta Hamari Deta Woh Tumko Bata
Sharm-O-Haya Pe Parde Gira Ke Karni Hain Hamko Khata

Hain Jo Iraaden Bata Doon Tumko Sharma Hi Jaaogi Tum
Dhadakanen Jo Suna Doon Tumko Ghabraa Hi Jaaogi Tum
Hamko Aata Nahi Hain Chhupana Hona Hain Tujhmein Fanaa
Chaand Sifarish Jo Karta Hamari Deta Woh Tumko Bata
Sharm-O-Haya Pe Parde Gira Ke Karni Hain Hamko Khata

Translation of Chand Sifarish by bollywoodtarjuma

This beauty, both splendid and sober,
Glory to God! Glory to the Creator!

If moon pleaded for me, it would tell you,
how I wish to make this mistake,
without timidity, I will pursue it through.
I will dissolve to into dust for sure,
For your love, I will be a martyr

Let your breezy beauty touch and go,
and your supple stride branch and grow,
Hold me in your embrace,
and I will disappear in you
without leaving a trace.

If I spoke what’s on my mind,
coyness will overtake you like a tide.
If you hear my thumping heart,
panic might grip for a good part.
Still, I don’t know how to hide,
how I wish to melt with you inside.

If moon pleaded for me, it would tell you,
how I wish to make this mistake,
without timidity, I will pursue it through,
I will dissolve to into dust for sure,
For your love, I will be a martyr

Luka Chhupi – Rang De Basanti

Rang De Basanti (Colour it Saffron) is a very significant film from the Indian cinema repertoire, both for its aesthetic value and its lasting social impact. In its plot, the film draws parallels between Indian freedom fighters during colonial rule and a group of youngsters fighting for justice in independent India. In a masterfully written screenplay, the plot dwells on the real- world issues around excessive loss of Indian Air Force pilots’ lives due to technical snags in fighter plane, MIG 21. As the film progresses, it’s revealed that corrupt deals by politicians ensure faulty spares for the planes and endanger lives of pilots. The protest means used by the film included candle light vigils at the India Gate monument and civil society demonstrations publicized through media and word-of mouth

It is widely believed that Rang De Basanti paved way for aggressive questioning of political leadership by Indian civil society for their corrupt practices. Candle light marches and vigils at India Gate have since become a metaphor for public angst, as seen in Jessica Lall Murder Case, Priyadarshini Mattoo rape and murder,  Indian anti-corruption movement and, 2012 Delhi gang rape. I have always believed that films emerge from the culture we live in, rather than mere imagination and, they have (however limited) the power to bring in social transformations and Rang De Basanti is a shining case in point.

This evocative song written by former ad-man Prasoon Joshi is perhaps one of the most touching mother-child songs from Bollywood. A R Rahman’s earthy voice fits perfectly for it and along with legendary Indian singer, Lata Mangeshkar, it brings together Indian and Western notes in a very memorable way. The song is an imagined conversation of a mother and her dead son, ironically filmed over his funeral being conducted with state honors. She is anxiously asking her son to come back, knowing well he has laid down his life for his country and will never be back. The son on the other hand, is trying to convince her that he is in a better and beautiful place with all the comforts of heavan. As the song concludes, the son admits that even luxuries of paradise pale in comparison with his mother’s love. I have to admit, I always become teary-eyed at those lines as they bring a deep realization of a mother’s loss in this world and loneliness of a son’s soul in the next one. It’s a painful, yet poignant use of poetry.

Original Lyrics-Luka Chhupi
Mother:
Luka chuppi bahut huyi saamne aa ja naa
Kahan kahan dhoondha tujhe
Thak gayi hai ab teri maa
Aaja saanjh hui mujhe teri fikar
Dhundhla gayi dekh meri nazar aa ja na
Son:
Kya bataoon maa kahan hoon main
Yahan udney ko mere khula aasmaan hai
Tere kisson jaisa bhola salona
Jahan hain yahan sapno vala
Meri patang ho befikar udd rahi hai maa
Dor koi loote nahin beech se kaate na
Mother:
Teri raah takey aankhiyaan
Jaane kaisa kaisa hoye jiyaa,
Dhire dhire aangan utre andhera, mera deep kahan
Dhalke suraj kare ishara chanda tu hai kahan
Mere chanda tu hai kahan
Son:
Kaise tujhko dikhaun yahaan hai kya
Maine jharne se paani maa tod ke piya hai
Guchcha guchcha kai khwabon ka uchal ke chuwa hai
Chaaya liya bhali dhoop yahaan hai
Naya naya sa hai roop yahan
Yahaan sab kuch hai maa phir bhi
Lage bin tere mujhko akela
Mother:
Aaja saanjh hui mujhe teri fikar
Dhundhla gayi dekh meri nazar aa ja na

Mother:
Enough of this hide and seek,
your mother is now tired and weak.
All day I have been searching,
now just come out of hiding.
Come home and calm my worry,
It’s dark and my vision is hazy
Son:
How do I explain maa?
Here I fly in open skies.
Here your bed time stories are alive,
dreamy, innocent and full of surprise.
I am soaring like a kite,
no one challenges my might
or restrains my flight.
Mother:
My eyes are waiting and mind uneasy,
As darkness cloaks the porch gently,
I hunt for my life’s light with anxiety.
Sun has left but where is my moon,
please give a hint and come soon.
Son:
How do I show you this place maa?
I drink sweetness from waterfalls,
I touch bunches of dream-sprawls.
Warm sunshine peeps through shadows,
Everything is fresh with afterglows.
All comforts are here, just give a name,
but without you maa, nothing is the same.
All would be perfect here, if only
without you, I wasn’t so lonely.
Mother:
Come home and calm my worry,
It’s dark and my vision is hazy

Jee Le Zaraa – Talaash: The Answer Lies Within

This song penned by inimitable Javed Akhtar, makes an impassioned appeal to a companion, asking her to leave the pain of yesterdays behind and embrace the present and future with courage. At times life pushes us through such severe tests that we curl up in our shell and wish to stay there forever, afraid of any more pain. In such times, a gentle and empathetic voice of a confidante is a balm that can soothe and push us to start living to the fullest again. Music by the very talented Ram Sampath and the unique voice of Vishal Dadlani give this song depth and weight that rings in your ears for a long time.

Original Lyrics-Jee Le Zaraa

Main hoon gumsum tu bhi khamosh hai
Sach hai samay ka hi sab dosh hai
Dhadkan dhadkan ik gham rehta hai
Jaane kyu phir bhi dil kehta hai
Jee le zara, jee le zaraa
Kehta hai dil jee le zara
Aye humsafar, aye humnawa
Aa paas aa jee le zara

Hai zindagi mana dard bhari
Phir bhi isme ye raahat bhi hai
Main hoon tera aur tu hai meri
Yunhi rahe hum, ye chahat bhi hai
Phir dil ke dil se, pul kyu toote hain
Kyun hum jeene se itne roothe hain
Aa dil ke darwaaze hum khole
Aa hum dono jee bhar ke ro le
Jee le zara, jee le zaraa
Kehta hai dil jee le zara
Aye humsafar, aye humnawa
Aa paas aa jee le zaraa

Gham ke ye baadal guzar jaane de
Ab zindagi ko nikhar jaane de
Chhod de ab yaadon ke dukh sehnaa
Sun bhi le jo dil ka hai kehnaa
Jee le zaraa, jee le zaraa
Kehta hai dil jee le zaraa
Aye humsafar, aye humnawa
Aa paas aa jee le zara

Translation of Jee Le Zaraa by bollywoodtarjuma

We are both parched for words,
and fate is the one blame,
each heartbeat comes with an ache,
Still a voice rises from inside,
My companion, my soul mate, come close,
live a bit, just live a little bit more,
says the heart encore.

Life may be full of pain,
but one relief keeps us sane,
at least we are together,
and wish the same forever.
How did the bridge between our hearts shatter?
Why did we turn our backs to all that matters?
Let’s please open the doors of our core,
keep crying till we tear no more.
My companion, my soul mate, come close,
live a bit, just live a little bit more,
says the heart encore.

Let the wind carry away,
all clouds of gloom today.
Let the life blossom again,
and set aside all memoirs of pain.
Please heed the heart’s encore,
my companion, my soulmate, come close,
live a bit, just live a little bit more.
