Javed Akhtar’s Sapno Se Bhare Naina, is a song that gives an uncomfortable reality check to those who believe in endlessly chasing their dreams, without realizing how they miss out on simple joys of life while running the rat race. The film, Luck By Chance is an inside-account of Bollywood’s workings with the song itself featuring an audition being attended by several hundred hopefuls. While most meta-films of this nature are filled with certain amount of cynicism, director Zoya Akhtar managed to be both witty and sympathetic throughout the film. The film ends on a strong note which was quite non-melodramatic and emphasized on the need for individual contentment in a glamorous profession, rather than chasing other people’s expectation.

Before I move on to the actual song translation, I really want to post the opening sequence of the film (set to a lovely song which I can translate on request), filled with actual shots of film crew and technicians, exposing the dirt and grime behind the film frames. I think it’s an exceptional way of beginning such a film, touching almost on a documentary mode. The shots of two actors drinking tea in astronaut costumes and an actress entering a unkempt toilet, ironically dressed as an angel, stand out in particular for their subtle humor in unraveling this film about the Hindi film industry.

Original Lyrics-Sapno Se Bhare Naina

Bagiya bagiya bhaalak bhaage, titali phir bhi haath na laage
is pagale kaun bataaye, dhund raha hai jo tu jag mein
koi jo paaye toh mann mein hi paaye
sapano se bhare naina, tu nind hai na chaina

Aisee dagar koi agar to apnaaye, har raah ke wo ant pe rasta hi paaye

paani hai woh ya ret hai ye kaun jaane
jaise ke din se rain alag hai
sukh hai alag aur chain alag hai
par jo yeh dekhe woh nain alag hai
chain toh hai apna sukh hai paraaye
sapano se bhare naina, tu nind hai na chaina – (2)

Translation of Sapno Se Bhare Naina by bollywoodtarjuma

Little boy chasing a butterfly,
all though the gardens, under the sky,
How to tell this naïve child,
all that you run after in the world,
is only to be found inside.

For the eyes filled with ceaseless dreams,
sleep and peace lie in smithereens.

For those who walk such a trail,
find a turn at every end,
with feet scalded by scorching sun,
there is no shade to tend.
Such a traveler keeps wandering,
with no one to tell him,
that for the eyes filled with ceaseless dreams,
sleep and peace lie in smithereens.

In a desert, he follows an oasis,
its nothing but a mirage he chases.
Like night and day are poles apart,
comfort is distinct from,
happiness of the heart.
But to see it he needs the realization,
that joy is your own and,
comforts are all alien.

For the eyes filled with ceaseless dreams,
sleep and peace lie in smithereens.
