A song about eternal nature of love, that’s best left unnamed and untouched. No fancy words but deeply felt by anyone who hears this evergreen song in the voice of the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. Who else but Gulzar could have written something so metaphor-rich? From 1969 t0 the present day as I write this post, his writing is unmatched. The film, Khamoshi, based on a Bengali short story titled, ‘Nurse Mitra’ by Ashutosh Mukherjee, is a must watch for its great performances and poetic dialogue written by none other than Gulzar saab himself.

Original Lyrics-Humne Dekhi Hai In Aankhon Ki

humne dekhi hain un aankho ki mahakti khushbu

ek khamoshi hain sunti hain kaha karti hain

muskurahat si khili rahti hain aankho me kahin
pyar ko pyar hi rahne do koyi naam na do

Translation of Humne Dekhi Hai In Aankhon Ki by bollywoodtarjuma

I have seen the magic of
those fragrant eyes,
don’t touch it,
just soak it in the soul,
Let love be love,
don’t taint it with a name,

Love is neither a written word,
nor a spoken voice,
it’s a silence that listens and speaks,
A droplet of grace,
that doesn’t die out or halt anywhere,
love just flows eternally,
and perennially.
Don’t touch it,
just soak it in the soul,
Let love be love,
don’t taint it with a name.

A slight smile blossoms,
in the corner of eyes,
and light rests on the shy lashes.
Unspeaking and quivering,
the lips hold in,
countless silent fables.
Don’t touch it,
just soak it in the soul,
Let love be love,
don’t taint it with a name.
